Lily Bay + Mount Kineo

This was our backup plan for the week as we had intended to go to Lobster Lake on a canoe trip but the weather scared us away. We were able to sneak this trip into two beautiful nights at Lily Bay State Park in between two thunderstorms. We left home with no reservations hoping to get one of the campsites that are nonreservable and we ended up with a beautiful walk in tent site right on the shore of Moosehead Lake. Adi (4yo) and Ruth (2yo) immediately went swimming right at our site. We spent the rest of that evening looking around Lily Bay State Park and hanging around the fire. The next morning we got going slowly but eventually jumped in the truck and headed 40 minutes around the lake to Rockwood Landing, where we caught the shuttle boat to Mount Kineo. We avoided the steep trail up and the long trail around the shoreline by taking the Bridle Trail up and back. We got to the tower in about an hour and half. Adi walked the whole way. I carried Ruth in a Kelty child carrier and she fell asleep about 30 minutes from the top. We ate lunch and then climbed the 60 ft steel tower. Adi and Ruth both walked up on their own holding onto the railing with one hand and holding onto us with their other hand. Once up top the views are amazing and the size of Moosehead Lake seems infinite. We made our way back down, across the water on the shuttle and drove into Greenville for ice cream… only the line was insanely long. We bailed on the wait and went into the soda shop, where they serve ice cream and there was no line! That night we went down to Lily Bay State Park beach and playground after dinner to swim (again) and place and enjoy the sunset. The next morning we packed up and headed home.
